5 Tips for moving a Refrigerator

If you are moving your appliances to your new location, there will be a little extra work
involved. Moving a refrigerator is a heavy job that requires a little extra care. Check out
these tips for moving a refrigerator.
Clean It Out Thoroughly
Before you can move your refrigerator, you need to clean it out. Clear everything out of
both the fridge and the freezer. Unplug it so the appliance can cool off and defrost
before you move it. Use this opportunity to give all surfaces a thorough cleaning. Leave
the doors cracked open or propped so it doesn’t mildew or smell musty.

Use the Right Equipment and Procedures
Rent, borrow, or buy a properly sized appliance dolly. Make sure it is big enough to
move your fridge. Check the ratings on the dolly to make sure it can handle your fridge.
When you use the dolly, you will need to tilt the fridge up and away just enough to slide
the dolly under the edge. Set the fridge back down then use a strap to secure it on the
dolly. The dolly placement should be at the side of the fridge, not the back.

Don’t Do It Alone
Don’t try to move your refrigerator alone. Call in one or two others to help you.
Attempting to move a large, heavy appliance like a fridge by yourself can result in a erious accident or injury. Keep in mind that in order to move it, you will need to tip the
fridge over and if you are alone, it could easily tip over on top of you.

Measure Everything
Before you even attempt to move that fridge, grab your measuring tape. Measure all
sides of the fridge as well as the height. Next measure every doorway that you will need
to take it through — including the doorways at the new place you are moving to. Make
sure the refrigerator will actually fit.

Choose a Path
Before you try to move your fridge, make sure you have checked out the path you will
need to use to get it out of your house. Clear away any and all obstructions. Lock up
pets and corral small children into another room under the watchful eyes of someone
else. Make sure that there is nothing in the path that you will be bringing the fridge
through and that no pets or small children are running around and getting in the way.
Moving a refrigerator isn’t difficult, it is simply heavy, bulky, and awkward. A little extra
planning and attention to detail can help make that move easier. The above tips can
help you get that fridge where it needs to be so you can focus on the rest of your move.
