Mary Kay's Satin Hands Copycat Recipe

Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe

I have a super easy recipe for you!  I call it the Satin Hands Copy Cat Recipe!  It very similar to the three sugar scrub recipes but this one only has two ingredients! You can make this as a brown sugar scrub recipe too just change the sugar!

You have got to give this one a try!  If you work in the yard, this is perfect to make your hands super soft again!   You can use this as a body scrub.  I don’t think I would use it on my face though.  The sugar can be a bit too rough for that.  This makes an awesome gift and it’s super cheap to make too! Oh!  And…  you’ve also gotta try our Cracked Heel Remedy solution!  It really works!

Be sure to check out my other Homemade Sugar Scrub recipes that are made with essential oils.

Items Needed:

  1. Dawn Ultra Hand Renewal with Olay Beauty Scent Dishwashing liquid (just like the one found HERE on Amazon)  Also, watch for a Dawn coupon. These tend to go on sale at CVS for only 99¢!
  2. One container – I found this one at my local dollar store
  3. Sugar
  4. Labels or ribbon for decorating (optional)  TIP:  When you decorate them, they make a super cute gift idea too!

Pro TIP:   If you have extra dry hands or just like super soft hands then you have got to add 1 tablespoon of Vegetable Glycerin to this recipe!  It will stop the sugars from hardening and it traps moisture in your hands!  I now add this to all my sugar scrub recipes because I love how soft my hands feel!  (I’ve had a hard time finding it in the stores, so you may do yourself a favor and grab some on Amazon here)

 Directions:

First, add sugar to your container, leaving some room at the top so you can stir it. Next, slowly add Dawn Ultra Hand renewal and stir.  Be careful not to add to much at a time.  You want the consistency to be just like paste or peanut butter.

Viola!  That’s it!  Now just seal it and decorate it!

  1. I know this post is old… but I really wanted to make this. I bought some vegetable glycerin, but this particular type of Dawn seems to be discontinued. I can only find it at a ridiculously expensive price on Amazon. Do you have any recommendations (preferrably tested!) that would work just as well?

    1. I’ve used other brands and types of soap. I’ve done Palmolive soft touch and Dawn Gentle Clean. Both worked well and available at Walmart.

  2. Pardon my total ignorance on this…do you need to rinse this scrub off after using it and then follow with hand cream? These look like awesome gifts. Just want to make sure I understand. thanks!

  3. Hi I just made these for a shower favor. We made 20 jars… I recommend using COLD sugar also making a big batch is easier as the jars look messy if done individually…we did small batches ( easier to maneuver) and ( getting the perfect consistency)..we used 4 lbs of sugar and 28 oz of dawn we needed another bottle just for a tad more dawn for 4 th bag….I think a raw sugar would be even better…from making them my hands feel amazing!!! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Also I would say consistency of cookie batter (sugar cookies mixed W butter)

  4. Jennifer,
I’m Making this Satin Scrub as gifts for some teachers…….Can I mic 5 lbs. sugar and 1 28 ox. bottle of the dawn and about 3 tablespoons coconut oil all together in a bucket or do I have to do each jar at a time?

  5. I made five batches of this for holiday hostess gifts. And one for myself, of course. My version was one part Dawn to two parts sugar, plus one fourth cup glycerin for every cup of Dawn. I managed to track down the lavender scented Dawn and also made hand lotion combining unscented hand cream and lavender essential oil. I enclosed a card explaining what the two jars contained, along with directions to make more.

In some nice jars, frilled up in a gift bag, it makes a pretty fancy gift for under $5.00 a pop. For some reason, the lavender Dawn was hard to find. So if you like lavender as much as I do, stock up when you can.

  6. I’m getting some bubbles/foam that are separating to the top, have you run into that/do you have an idea how to avoid that?

      1. I made the scrub but it seperated so now the sugar is in the bottom and the soap on to. what can i do to fix that?

  7. I just made some for wedding shower favors. Not done yet. Made 4 oz jars. Have to make 108 tital. Thanks. Great recipe. Love it.

  8. I absolutely love Satin Hands! This is it!!! Thank you!! I have used organic brown sugar, a little bit of honey and vitamin E with it to help with moisturizer. Yes it doesn’t smell the greatest, so I added a little scented oil. Your a brilliant lady, Thanks!

    1. Cherie,
The Dawn renewal already has the Vitamin E in it! (not sure if you knew this or not) but it sure wouldn’t hurt to add extra for moisturizing either! Oh, I’ve also tried this with brown sugar too and love it! I will definitely try honey next time too! Great idea!!! Thanks!

    1. I’ve almost used all of mine up in about 4 months. Not sure how long the shelf life is to be honest. sorry.

  9. Thank you so much for this idea. I love scrubs and stuff for my body!!! I am planning on giving it as a mothers day gift.

  10. Thank u so much for sharing this!I’m a postal worker and work outside. My hands r always in need of some TLC can’t wait to try this!!:)

  11. Hi, How are you? I love this idea but I was just wondering if I could substitute the Dawn for something else as they don’t sell it in England. And if I can what would you suggest please. Thanks

    1. This particular Dawn has a moisturizing ingredient in it and it smells really nice. If you are trying to mimic this recipe without Dawn Renewal I would experiment with a soap that is not clear. I would even try some moisturizing shampoos too. I am tempted to do this myself too! I will let you know what I my findings are in an updated post. Stay tunned! Oh, and please let me know if you try it too!

  12. Just tried this but we do,not have dawn in Australia so used a soap with a moisturiser in it and it worked a treat. Even got hubby using it on his rough tradie hands. THANKS!!

  13. Dishwashing liquid for a hand scrub? Now that’s new!
I always wash my hands with another hand soap after using dishwashing soap…don’t like the smell lingering on my palms. But i am guessing this particular pink color one from Dawn smells better.

    1. do you put the whole bag of sugar in the dawn saop and how much dawn?

      1. Hi Kim! I added about two cups of sugar just enough to fill the container about 3/4 the way full. Then I slowly added the Dawn (about 2 tablespoons at a time) and I mixed it. I’m not sure how much I added because I kept mixing it until it became the consistency of peanut butter. If you add too much Dawn it will be watery. If that happens just add a bit more sugar.
