Five Hidden Benefits of Horseradish
Five Hidden Benefits of Horseradish
Popular for being the condiment that lights a fire under a really good sandwich, horseradish is actually so much more. This plant, commonly harvested as a root, is loaded with all kinds of healthy beneficial nutrients. In fact, some say that horseradish is on the short list of plants that are close to perfect. That said, not everyone can handle it’s pungent and powerful flavors. Here are five benefits of horseradish that might surprise you:
To Clear Your Sinuses
Anyone that has ever eaten horseradish and Wasabi in particular knows that your sinuses will quickly begin to evacuate. This natural way to clean out the sinuses can be a huge relief if you are dealing with a stuffy nose or nasal problems.
To Break Up Congestion
Like sinuses, congestion responds quite well to the powerful flavors of horseradish. A very good recipe to get this started is to mix a half a teaspoon of each of the following ingredients together:
Garlic (minced)
Mustard
Ginger
Crushed Peppers
Horseradish
Crush them up and mix well into a dip of sorts. You may need to add water to bring them together but don’t add much. You want the final product to be like a spread. Eat it in small amounts on crackers and you will find that mucous will loosen up easily.

To Increase Your Appetite
There is nothing like flavor to boost an appetite and horseradish has plenty of that. When you are sick and need a bit of stimulation to your taste buds to help you feel hungry, the flavor of horseradish can help. Use it as a boost to crackers, bread and other basics to get the saliva flowing again.
To Lower Blood Pressure
Blood pressure problems are all over the place and it seems to be getting worse by the day. Because of this, we need to find ways to naturally lower blood pressure when we can. The potassium in horseradish does that nicely. Potassium regulates this and can be a wonderful source of natural improvement.
To Help You Lose Weight
If you want to add flavor to a recipe without adding calories or fat, horseradish is a wonderful substitute. This wonder-root is completely devoid of fat and the caloric count is tiny too. The flavor in horseradish, however, is huge. Be sparing, but add it to some of your favorite dishes for a nice change of pace with big flavors!
