Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Removal for Dogs!
I bet you will be ecstatic when I tell you I have a natures miracle skunk odor removal recipe for dogs! Was your dog sprayed by skunk? Ewwww…. I’ve been there! I know what you are going through. I have the best homemade skunk odor removal recipe for you!
When skunks spray on dogs you have to keep in mind depending upon what area was targeted your pooch may have watery eyes, he may be excessively drooling or licking. These are not necessarily allergic reactions or anything to worry about.
The smell may also smell quite different when you are *ahem* up close and personal after a skunk attack. You are use to driving by and moving on but when you stay in the area in close proximity it may smell like fur burning. Again, try not to be alarmed. Consider this prime bonding time with your pup!!!
There are just a few ingredients that are very inexpensive to get to create a Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Removal Shampoo for dogs:
Large bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide. If you have a Great Dane you might need a little more!
1-2 boxes of Baking Soda
2-3 tablespoons of Dawn dish soap. The Blue kind seems to work the best.
1-6 Cans of crushed tomatoes I would use 1 can for a small dog, 2 cans for medium and 3 cans on a large dog. Its ok to go overboard here. Besides, if you buy too much you can always use it to make home made salsa!!! I know thats probably not going to be the first thing on your mind when you are trying to eliminate skunk smell.
****** VERY IMPORTANT****** Do not let your dog ingest the hydrogen peroxide. It will make them vomit.
Don’t worry, the hyrdogen peroxide does not bleach dog fur like human hair.
I will let you decide where you want to get your pup skunk free but I recommend outside with a water hose because you don’t want the crushed tomatoes to clog your tub drain. If you have a galvanized wash tub, those work great.
Mix the dish soap, peroxide and baking soda to make a soapy paste. Since I have no idea where the skunk smell is emanating from I use this paste on the entire pooch. Of course, avoid the eyes and mouth.
After applying the paste rinse off well.
Now the key to removing most of the skunk smell is to use the crushed tomatoes. Open the can and pour all over your social butterfly. This is where the galvanized tub comes in handy. You can pick up what falls to the bottom and replace on ares that aren’t covered. You can let Fluffy soak for a few minutes if you’d like.
Rinse out the tomatoes well.
Now, keep in mind that skunk smell is going to stick around everything for a while. It’s going to be in your nose and on your dog’s fur.
Also keep in mind that this is a home made skunk removal so it may take a few rounds to completely neutralize skunk odor.
If you really can’t get the smell out you can use a few drops of orange essential oil in a water bottle diluted in a cup of water.
I have also heard that apple cider vinegar helps in getting rid of skunk smell especially on the clothes you wear while scrubbing your doggie. I have not tried this yet so let me know if it works.
I hope this home remedy for skunk odor helps you when Fluffy, the social butterfly starts introducing herself to the local skunk population. It can be frustrating and annoying but this is what doggies do. They are curious and they like to make new neighborhood friends!!! Or bark and scare the spray out of a skunk.
Here is an idea for Halloween! Appropriately named “Lil stinker”!!!
