How to Organize a Grocery Shopping List
When it’s time to go grocery shopping, a list is a must. Organizing your grocery list may take a little extra time, but it will help you save time and money in the long run. Check out these tips for getting your list in order and ready to go.
Use a Store Map
It’s frustrating to be grocery shopping and realize the next item on your shopping list is in a part of the store you’ve already been. Organizing your list according to the store map can save you time and frustration. Most grocery stores offer maps that show the aisles and locations of groups of items. Ask for a map at the customer service desk of your store then use it to create your list.
Map Out Your Route
Most people stick to a routine when they grocery shop. They work their way through the store in a certain direction and manner that is comfortable for them. Figure out what works best for you then use that route to create your list. Consult with the store map as you write out your list.
Write Headings
To keep your list organized and your shopping on track, try sorting your list by aisles or type then create these headings on your list. For example, use headings like produce, breads, meats, snacks, breakfast foods, frozen, etc. Set the headings up on your list according to their locations in the store. This can help you make sure you get everything you need and not backtracking.
Sort Your Coupons and Consult Sale Ads
After you’ve written out your list, go through sale ads to check for sales on the items you need. If your grocery store price matches, check competitor’s ads and be sure to make notes on your grocery list. Keep the sale ads with your list. Clip them together so you have them ready when it’s time to shop.
After you’ve checked out the sales, it’s time to match up coupons you have. Sort through your coupon stash to find coupons for items you’ve put on your list. Set the coupon aside and make a note on your list that you have a coupon (so you don’t forget!). After you’re finished, put the coupons you’ve set aside into a separate envelope then clip it with the list and the sale ads.
When you’re ready to do your grocery shopping, choose a time when you won’t be rushed. Try to do your shopping on your own so you won’t be distracted by the kids or the spouse — unless they can help you out. Follow your organized list and mark everything off as you pick it up. By the time you get to the end of the store, your list should be totally marked through. If this is a regular list that you will be using, be sure to make copies of it before you mark on it so you can use it again. How to Organize a Grocery Shopping List
