7 Quick Tips to Organize Kids Clothes

When we go to organize kids clothes, some things are obvious. Hang them up a certain way, fold them a certain way and keep the laundry up to date are all good ideas, but they are not necessarily going to get you organized. Organization demands that you have a place for everything and that you make things accessible for both you and your children. This begins with creating a simple system that you all can adhere to. Here are 7 quick and easy tips to organize kids clothes that you can start on right away!

Purge the unwanted

Getting rid of the unwanted might mean throwing them away, donating them or putting them back for a younger sibling that will need it. Some folks even turn in used clothes to a consignment shop and sell them for money to buy new clothes. Some have yard sales. Whatever  you prefer, begin your new system by going through every piece of clothing your child has and purging. This will make your load a bit lighter and give you a great idea of what is needed and what is not.

Purchase four bins

You will need four bins that are various sizes depending on where you plan to keep them. One bin is for seasonal storage. This is to be kept completely out of the way. Many people like to put this under the bed so you might want to get a long, flat bin for this one. The next is for donations. This will be clothes or shoes that are in good repair, but no longer fit anyone in your family. Next will be kids clothes  you wish to sell. This is for the clothes you know you want to sell either at the consignment shop or the yard sale. Finally you will want a bin for “other” categories. This might be for sentimental clothing pieces, clothing that is intended for a specific person or child, or items that were simply out of fashion but might come back.

Store items in the bins as you encounter them

Now that you have these bins in place, commit to using them each and every time you see that something applies. When you come across that pair of shoes that doesn’t fit, decide right then and there what you wish to do with them and file them away in the bins accordingly. Not making decisions is what causes clutter in our lives and things will pile up quickly. To organize kids clothes, you have to be decisive and act on that decision right away.

Dump the bins as they fill up

As the bins get full, you will then take the contents and donate, sell or give them away as needed. This will ensure that you are sending items out as you bring items in. Nothing is better than the feeling you get when you donate clothes to help a child that is doing without. Find a great local charity and you will have an endless pipeline of feel good moments to enjoy. The kids are so thankful for the things you bring that it makes it all worth the time and energy a million times over.

Always switch out seasons for space

When one season is up, store them away in the bins marked seasonal and forget them for one year. Bring out the previous year and try everything on. This is when you will purge each year and you will also guarantee that you buy the kids clothes that are actually needed. Storing away the off season will also give you a ton more drawer space and closet space for what they are currently wearing.

Keep like items together at all times

You want to keep shirts with shirts and pants with pants. Having categories really is important when storing kids clothes are involved. You will get lost otherwise. Organize them neatly and then stick to that system.

Designate a ‘next day” area and “dirty” area for kids

As for kids, you have to make the system reasonable for them too. Have them place their dirty clothes in one spot every single day. Also, have a spot to lay out their school clothes and place their book bags/homework each day. This will give them areas to work within and will definitely keep them on track. Teach your kids to organize kids clothes too and you will have that much less work to do!

  1. Some great ideas! I always make sure I have my clothes laid out for the next day, but I’ve never thought about the “next day” area for my kids 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
