How to Organize Your Car
How to Organize Your Car
Is your car a traveling mess? Maybe it’s time to get all of that stuff organized and whipped into shape. Check out these ideas for getting your car organized and in order.
Use a Trash Can
If you have kids, you need a small trash receptacle of some type in your car. Look for something that can hang on the back of the front seats or can hang on the sides of the doors. Work on getting everyone in the family to remember to throw away trash before they get out of the car instead of leaving it on the seats or floorboards. Empty the trash containers at least once a week.
Remove Unnecessary Items
Admit it, you’re like the rest of us: There’s a lot of stuff riding around in your car that doesn’t belong there. From toys, to extra umbrellas, to extra jackets, to library books, to pieces of mail — you probably have plenty of things that belong somewhere else. Get them out of the car and to that someplace else!
Make Use of Your Trunk
Your trunk is meant to be used for storage in your car. Make use of the trunk by keeping needed items there instead of in the cab of your car. A first aid kit can be kept in the trunk, along with road maps, your CD collection, umbrellas, and other miscellaneous items you want to keep in the car.
Keep it All Contained
If you plan on keeping stuff in your trunk, be sure that everything is contained. You don’t want things rolling around loose as this can cause damage to the items or to the inside of your vehicle. Invest in compact plastic storage boxes to keep everything contained and organized. Mark the lids of each box so you know what is in them.
Put Your Glove Compartment in Order
Don’t forget about getting your glove compartment in order. This is a very common area that is full of great mess. You might keep extra napkins from drive through trips, maps, insurance cards, service papers, and more in the glove compartment. If you have it stuffed too full, you won’t be able to find anything if you need it. Pull everything out and discard outdated items, trash, and anything you don’t need. Figure out what can go elsewhere and what needs to be put back into the glove box. Once you get it organized, take care to keep it in order so you know what’s in there from this point forward.
Getting your car organized can help you find the things you need, but it can also give your vehicle a much neater appearance. Make a point of straightening, organizing, and throwing away trash every week to keep your car neat and clean.
