5 Tips to a Roomy and Organized Kitchen Counter
5 Tips to a Roomy and Organized Kitchen Counter
Kitchen counters seem to be catch alls in most homes. Everyone walks through the kitchen and drops stuff on the counter, so when you need to actually use the counter, it’s cluttered. Here are a few tips to help you clear off and organize that kitchen counter so it looks neater and is ready for kitchen use.
Do a Clean Sweep
Start your organizing by doing a clean sweep of your counters. Remove everything that can be moved. After the counters are cleared, wipe them down with a disinfectant cleaner and allow the counter tops to dry. After they are dry you are ready to get started.
Put Away Small Appliances
If you peruse home decor magazines, you will always see small appliances like blenders and mixers sitting on counter tops. They look cool in the picture but in reality, that is very impractical. Counters can easily look cluttered and busy even when they are “clean” by just storing too much stuff on them. Store your small appliances elsewhere — out of sight, and definitely not on your counter tops. Typically, a microwave or a toaster oven would be your best bet for items to keep on the counter.
Keep Out Only What is Necessary
You should keep out only necessary things on the counters. Put your pretty flour and sugar containers somewhere else. If you keep too much stuff on your counters, they will appear very messy and cluttered and you are striving for n eat and organized. What items are good choices for your counters?
–A decorative container full of utensils that you use often
–A roll of paper towels or a decorative napkin holder
–Salt and pepper shakers
–A candle or two
Set a Reminder to Clear the Counter
Set up a reminder on your phone to clear off your counters. It might seem like a silly notion, but if let go, your counters can run away from you. Set a reminder for once or twice a week, or even daily if you prefer, to straighten and clear off the counters.
Set Up a Catch All Elsewhere
Don’t let your kitchen counters continue to be a catch all for your family. Set up a small table right inside your back door or somewhere else and include a decorative basket or two. It might take some work, but try to retrain your family to use this new area as the catch all — instead of the kitchen counters.
Enjoy the clean lines and organized feel of cleared counters in your kitchen. Visually, those clean counters will be less distracting and will help instill a sense of calmness in you. After all, clutter tends to make a person feel anxious. Clear those counters and enjoy spending time in your kitchen doing things other than cleaning!
