7 Stress Busters for the Christmas Holiday Season

When it comes to the holiday season, stress has taken a seat right alongside peace and goodwill in far too many households. The Christmas season is not about the number of gifts you give or having the absolute perfect Christmas turkey. In fact, some people have stressed their way through so many Christmas seasons that they actually dread the season when it rolls around. That is incredibly sad and I am making it my personal mission to eliminate this epidemic. Here are 7 stress busters to change your perceptions of the Christmas Holiday Season forever:

7. Adjust your expectations

Nearly every source of Holiday stress begins with unrealistic expectations. Whether you are expecting a better gift, expecting a smooth visit to the in-laws or expecting your Uncle John not to pass gas at the dinner table, stress begins with someone not thinking things through logically. Temper your expectations and let imperfect be plenty good enough.

6. Stay within your means

When it comes to buying and giving, you are under no obligations. Regardless of the gifts given to you, you are only obligated to give what you feel is reasonable. If your boss brings you a $100 gift card and you only give him a card, you should not feel badly about it. Staying within your means will keep your stress levels reasonable. Overspending is not a good idea no matter what you feel forced to do. You only can force yourself to overspend.

5. Go homemade

Gifts are so much fun and become special when we make them ourselves. The thought and creativity that can go into giving each other homemade gifts will be embraced and enjoyed by all. Focus on the kids and give all the adults a handmade creation.

4. Share the work

Super mom syndrome (or Dad) is a horrible thing to have at Christmas. This is a time when your delegation skills should be on high alert and your family should be rallying to your side. If they are not, you need to give them some impetus. (Hold off on supper….gifts….laundry) Make sure everyone is carrying their own load and helping out.

3. Keep your spirit full

Staying in close touch with your spiritual side during the season is very important and you should always keep that top of mind during the holiday season. Quiet time or prayer can do wonders to eliminate stress and open your mind to other options being presented to you. Get alone and with your Creator whenever possible and recharge.

2.  Make clear priority lists

Knowing what is really important to you and your family is absolutely a great stress buster. You can quickly eliminate stress simply by ensuring your kids and family are doing what they love best. Spending time together is a great part of the holiday season. Prioritize your holidays and you will always be on point with what makes you happy.

1. Don’t be afraid to eliminate holiday Grinches

If you have a family member that regularly causes problems, raises stress levels and generally makes themselves a nuisance, don’t invite them to the party. Of course, there are going to be times when that is impossible. If that is the case, simply allow yourself to avoid them whenever possible. Too often we champion ourselves into thinking we can “fix” these Grinches. Don’t stress yourself over it. If you can create a wonderful conversion, go for it. Otherwise, allow yourself to walk away or avoid it altogether. It is your Christmas season too and you are allowed to enjoy yourself.
